Mrs.Hoffman's 5th grade students just finished learning about Jamestown. They learned about the many struggles colonists faced during Early Jamestown of 1607 such as starvation and dehydration, the bitter cold weather conditions, and how it was important to get along with Native Americans. Colonists would have to realize their survival depended on the help from the Powhatan Indians. At the end of the unit students created a replica of Jamestown.

The individuals are not scheduled to return to school until cleared by the Winnebago County Health Department to do so. Based on the health department’s contact investigation, anyone identified to have been in close contact will also quarantine at home. If additional close contacts are identified as part of the investigation, the health department will reach out and provide appropriate guidance.
We continue to work proactively to keep students and staff safe by following Winnebago County Health Department, Illinois Department of Public Health, and Centers for Disease Control guidelines. We encourage everyone to practice social distancing, wear a face covering when in public, frequently wash hands and hard surfaces, and stay home if they are ill or experiencing any COVID symptoms. Here are pictures of 6th grade students holding their Christmas Around the World boxes. Students chose a country and research how that country celebrates Christmas. They had to find out about traditions, food and drink, and other fun facts. They also completed the box, bow, and tag that had the country's information on it. Then each student presented their box to the class.

Dear Parents and Community Members,
I would like to again thank you for all of your collective efforts as we continue to deal with the impacts of the pandemic. As I have stated previously it takes a community effort to educate our students. The positive numbers are increasing in Illinois and in Winnebago County. However, the positivity rate in the schools overall is low. Quarantining students who are close contacts is the process which helps reduce the potential spread. I want to continue to encourage our families to please follow the guidance from our health departments. Our primary focus is to maintain and continue to provide in-person instruction.
Unfortunately, it is still essential our families prepare for the possibility of either an individual student, classroom, school or the district going from in-person learning to remote. Please have a family plan ready. We work very closely with the Winnebago County Health Department whenever we receive a positive case.
Recently, Connie White our food service director and I met with a representative from the Illinois State Board of Education regarding the opportunity to participate in the USDA free lunch program for all during the Covid pandemic. This is a federal program monitored by ISBE. There were concerns previously that the funding was not flowing to the districts. As long as the district receives the funding for it, we will take advantage of this program, beginning this month. I will inform you should the funding fail to flow to the district.
Please be safe.
Sincerely,
Bill Faller

Dear Parents, Guardians and Staff,
When a confirmed case of COVID-19 occurs we will notify all parents and staff in the impacted building(s). This communication is to inform you that one individual has tested positive at Pecatonica Elementary. The individual is currently in isolation at home.
The individual is not scheduled to return to school until cleared by the Winnebago County Health Department to do so. The school is currently working with the Winnebago County Health Department to identify those in close contact with this individual. Close contact is defined by the Center for Disease Control as someone who was within 6 feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes starting from 2 days before illness onset (or, for asymptomatic clients, 2 days prior to positive specimen collection) until the time the patient is isolated.
Based on the health department’s contact investigation, anyone identified to have been in close contact will also quarantine at home. If additional close contacts are identified as part of the investigation, the health department will reach out and provide appropriate guidance.
We continue to work proactively to keep students and staff safe by following Winnebago County Health Department (WCHD), Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines. We encourage everyone to practice social distancing, wear a face covering when in public, frequently wash hands and hard surfaces, and stay home if they are ill or experiencing any COVID symptoms. The health and safety of our students and staff is our highest priority.
Sincerely,
Bill Faller
Superintendent

Forget the Ice Bucket Challenge. Pecatonica High School Key Club has a challenge for you that's going to make a huge difference in our local communities! Due to COVID-19 concerns, blood centers across America saw a loss of hundreds of thousands of blood donations and thousands of blood drive cancellations. The PHS annual blood drive is still on, though!
On Monday, May 11, from noon to 5:30, the Rock River Valley Blood Center donation bus will be at Pecatonica High School to give you the chance to donate the gift of life!
The RRVBC and Pec School District have taken great care to ensure safety and social distancing. Masks will need to be worn at all times.
We have 85 donation slots to fill and we hope that this will be a record-breaking drive, showing everyone that we're not going to let a crisis stop us from rolling up our sleeves and helping others!
Walk-ins are welcome, but we encourage you to sign up for your donation time here: https://donor.rrvbc.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/53639 .

🚗 🚘 🚙 Pecatonica Elementary Staff on (Car) Parade!!
We are all missing the kiddos and our normal routines more than words! I am sorry that this isn't the school year we had all hoped for back in August! We appreciate all your support and flexibility with remote learning! And now we all need some fun!!
On Tuesday, April 21, we will be having a car parade of Elementary staff around Pecatonica and Westlake Village to see all of our amazing students and families! We will be starting at noon in Pecatonica and following the route the Easter Bunny took, and we will visit Westlake Village after our route through town.
Some rules we have discussed as a staff and learned from the experiences of others who have done this before us...
1) Staff will NOT be exiting cars and we ask that you and your children PLEASE DO NOT APPROACH THE CARS...We are doing this the SAFEST way possible....social distancing is the order of the day, so in our cars we will stay....lots of waves and smiles, we can shout out our windows, honk our horns to say hello, but we will not be exiting cars or touching/hugging...It’s hard for us, too! We miss those hugs a lot!
2) Please feel free to wear crazy hair or a crazy hat....it's crazy hair day and so feel free to add to our silly fun!
3) We will not stop or slow down to talk to people, and we are going to be a huge group of cars with a long route. Please don't think we are rude....we have a lot of ground to cover and want everyone to be safe!
4) We have asked staff to not hand out items or accept items along the way....Please help us stay safe! You can encourage you special teachers and staff with signs, but please don’t give those items to them along the way....We will see and feel the love without taking that reminder with us!
5) If you live outside of the area where the Easter Bunny traveled (rural areas outside of the village) and would like to glimpse us as we drive by, you may park somewhere around town and we ask that you do NOT exit your cars. In order to get permission to have our car parade, we had to ensure we would
strictly observe safe, social distancing guidelines.
We are so excited for this fun and memorable way of connecting to our kiddos and families!!!
More details to come, and we are looking forward to seeing you and all your crazy hair and hats on Tuesday!
We will share any route updates, and for now, just save the date and time! 😊😊😊😊 🚙 🚘 🚗 🚗 🚘 🚙 😊😊😊

As you all are aware our students and especially our seniors are missing out on a very exciting period in their school year. At this point we do not know if school will resume and if they will get to get closure to their senior year activities. Many of you have seen some schools are turning on the lights at their fields and sports stadiums to honor the seniors at various times.
To honor our Pecatonica Seniors we will attempt to "put a little light on their lives" on Monday, April 20, 2020.
At 8:20 (20:20) pm we will turn on the football lights and the scoreboard for 20 minutes and 20 seconds.
Take a minute to drive by the school or through the parking lot to honor the seniors. Please stay in your cars and follow all CDC guidlines.

The Finance Committee meeting scheduled for Wednesday April 15, 2020 has been canceled.

If you have high school students, please help out the yearbook by sending photos to replayit.com It is now more difficult than ever to obtain photos, quotes and stories. We need candids, club activities, Winter dance, and anything else the students want in their book. Thank you!

Over the break, some route changes were made to accommodate our students due to some changes in our staff and a shortage of drivers. Drivers attempted to contact all parents of children who would experience a change of bus driver, pickup, or dropoff time either before or after school. Today is our first dismissal with these changes in place, and there is an issue with the phone system at the elementary school. Please do not be alarmed if your child's return time is different today that it usually is, as we will be working diligently after school to ensure that all students are on the correct bus to be transported after school. There may be some delays as we make certain that the process is smooth after school today. A reminder from the email Mrs. Brockway sent earlier to elementary families, if you need to reach the ES today, please call 815-239-2611, and choose option 4 should you need to reach the ES Office.
We appreciate your patience and cooperation.

Good morning, and welcome back to our first day with kiddos in the new year! Our phone system at the Elementary School is currently awaiting repair from Frontier, as we cannot receive incoming calls to 815-239-2550. Until further notice, to reach PES, please call 815-239-2611 and choose option 4. That will get you directly to the Elementary Office. We apologize for the inconvenience, and we will let you know when service is completely restored. Thanks!!

Congratulations to the varsity boys basketball team on their 43-38 win over Freeport Aquin to win the Eastland Holiday Tournament.

The Pecatonica CUSD #321 is proud to congratulate one of our amazing teachers, Dawn Lucas, who has been teaching in our District for 25 years as of January 10, 2019! Ms. Lucas has taught most of the grade levels at the elementary school including special education and early childhood. She noted that recently she has began teaching her previous students' children, and her own two children now attend the middle school. She is deeply rooted in our community and in our hearts! We appreciate her love and humor, friendship, commitment to education, and look forward to many more years with our District. Thank you for your 25 years of dedication and service!

Dear Parents and Students,
Over the Christmas break, Mr. Kirby (Chorus Teacher) informed us that he was resigning and would not return for the second semester. While the timing was unfortunate, we were able to find a December graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville who will assume his choral teaching responsibilities starting on January 23, 2019. Until that time, we will operate the choral classrooms with a substitute teacher. Mr. Shippy has assumed the lead director role for the upcoming musical.
Sincerely, Bill Faller
