Sophomore Anna Munson named writing contest winner second year in a row On Tuesday, April 18, Pecatonica High School sophomore Anna Munson was honored at the 98th Annual Rockford Woman’s Club Creative Writing Contest luncheon. Back in March, Anna submitted two pieces of writing: a poem and a short story. Both of her creative writing pieces were chosen as two of ten finalists out of more than 120 writing submissions from students in the greater Rockford area. Anna, her parents, and her former Language Arts teacher Mrs. Johnson attended the luncheon with the eight other finalists, their families and teachers, and members of the Rockford Woman’s Club. Each student read their poem or work of prose and received a $50 scholarship. At the end of the event, Rockford Woman’s Club President Nancy Whitlock announced that Anna was the grand prize winner of the Genevieve B. Taxon Award, which includes a $1,000 scholarship, for her work of prose “The Peculiarity of Walter Browns.” This marks the second year in a row in which Anna’s writing has won the Rockford Woman’s Club Creative Writing Contest’s grand prize.

Pec HS Key Club is holding a pet photo contest to raise money for Noah's Ark Animal Sanctuary & CARE for PETS, two awesome organizations focused on the welfare of local animals. Last week, students & staff made donations to submit photos of their pet(s) in four different categories: Cutest Dog, Not a Dog but it's Sure Cute, Best .5 Photo, & So Ugly it's Cute. We received some great pictures! On Monday & Tuesday, students & staff will be able to vote for their favorite photos by making a donation. We're opening the donating/voting to our family & friends outside of school, too! Each vote is a $1 donation, and you can vote as many times as you'd like! Be sure to leave the name of the pet you're voting for. Dear PES Families, I was planning to hold off on sending this til a later time, as I didn't want it to be a distraction from the remaining fun to be had this school year. However, as is true in such a close knit family community, there are some stories circulating now about what is happening with enough partial truths that I wanted to reach out to personally let you know our family's update. Again, it's a happy secret, and we were just waiting til a better time to reveal it. My husband, Tim, has unexpectedly gotten a job, one he has only dreamed of, and things have changed very quickly for our little family. It was something we weren't expecting to happen for a few more years, but alas, now is the right time, and we are stepping out in faith. After both of our health challenges, we know we must live every day to the fullest and not ever close the door on an opportunity. I want to live life at a slower pace than an elementary principal life here in Pecatonica provides, and thus, in doing what is best for our school, it is time for me to close this wonderful chapter in my life. My last day as the principal of PES will be June 30, 2023. I am not exactly certain what is next for me, but it is time to let my sweet Tim, who has worked sooooo hard to grow as a nurse, have the chance to chase HIS dreams. Tim and I both realize how very precious life is, and the benefits for our family far outweigh the negatives in this decision. I am looking at lots of different opportunities for this next chapter, and we will ultimately see what is the best fit for our family. I have loved every special moment of my time here, and I have some friendships and relationships that I will treasure always! Our staff and families are the bedrock of this school, and I am honored to have been a part of such a special school community to call home for the last 17 years. Together, in a strong partnership of staff and families, hand in hand with our children, we made our school the most wonderful place for a kid to be a kid in the stateline, probably in all of Northern Illinois, and our kiddos will continue to spread their wings and change the world as they grow up. That makes leaving this role bittersweet, but I could not be more proud of the good work we have done here over the last nearly 2 decades together, and I know that our school will continue to build upon this firm foundation and continue to show the world why PES is THE BEST of the VERY VERY BEST!!
